FROM INDIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING

Lawmakers are facing a $2 billion drop in expected revenue as they work to finalize the state budget. The latest forecast shows a $2.4 billion decline over three years, with no federal aid to backfill the gap — unlike during the Great Recession.

Indiana Public Broadcasting reports Senate Republicans say all options are on the table, including possible cuts or tax hikes on items like cigarettes or alcohol. But some Democrats are pushing back, saying education should be protected and revenue-generating alternatives should be considered.

The Braun administration says it’s focused on avoiding a worst-case scenario while continuing to fund public safety and education. Lawmakers plan to wrap up the budget in the next two weeks.
