If you’ve ever gone through a security checkpoint and had to take a pocket knife or other prohibited items back to your vehicle, you know it’s an inconvenience.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department wants to eliminate the issue at the Knox County Courthouse.

As many know, cell phones are not allowed in the courtrooms. Needless to say, weapons aren’t either, and that includes pocket knives. Officials say many who come to the courthouse also carry mace.

Tuesday, Sheriff Doug Vantlin went before the commissioners seeking approval to install lockboxes somewhere near the security entrance of the courthouse to store items for patrons.

Vantlin wants freestanding boxes to avoid drilling into courthouse walls.

The commissioners approved the request.

Vantlin says he will seek grant money to fund the effort.
