Wabash County, Illinois authorities responded to a chaotic series of events  following a reported disturbance on Thursday at 229 N. Main Street in Bellmont.

According to Sheriff Derek Morgan, deputies were alerted by Wabash County 911 about a male aggressor who fled the scene in a blue passenger car heading north on E 400 Road before turning eastbound on Highway 15. A responding deputy located the vehicle, which was driving erratically and at a high speed. Moments later, the car crashed on the south side of Highway 15, just east of the intersection with E 700 Road (Maud Road).

The deputy arrived to find the male suspect attempting to kick out the back window of the car. After exiting the vehicle, the man became confrontational, began removing his clothes, and threw a cigarette at the deputy. He reportedly asked the officer about his “branch” and refused to follow commands.

Assistance from the Mt. Carmel Police Department was requested as the man marched naked in the snow, ignoring orders. For safety reasons, officers deployed a taser and took the individual into protective custody without further incident.

During the encounter, the man made incoherent statements about Jesus, Donald Trump, and nuclear war, while also threatening to take officers’ firearms and shoot them. He was transported to Wabash General Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The investigation is ongoing.
