As reported earlier this month, state and local police have been stepping up patrols to combat drunk and unsafe driving over the Thanksgiving season.

Officials remind drivers that impaired driving is a leading cause of fatal crashes, which spike over Thanksgiving. In 2021, 190 people nationwide died in alcohol-related crashes during the holiday period.

According to Sgt. Todd Ringle with the Indiana State Police, last year in Indiana there were 2,400 crashes throughout the state resulting in 342 injuries and 11 fatalities.

The night before Thanksgiving, often called “Drinksgiving,” is a particularly dangerous time for impaired driving.  Police urge everyone to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or using a ride service.
