national-adoption-month

November marks National Adoption Month, a time to honor the love and commitment shared by adoptive families while raising awareness about adoption’s vital role.

Crystal Mefford, Family Case Manager with the Knox County Department of Child Services (DCS), emphasized the department’s dedication to connecting children with permanent homes. “Adoption is a permanency option when reunification isn’t possible,” Mefford explained. “We explore options with foster parents, pre-adoptive families, or relatives to find a child their forever home.”

Becoming a foster parent is often the first step toward adoption through DCS. Families undergo rigorous background checks, home studies, and specialized training to ensure they’re prepared to provide a safe, loving environment. While some adopt directly, others foster children and later adopt if reunification isn’t an option.

Mefford shared that, while the adoption list in Knox County is relatively small, numerous children across the state are in need. She stressed the importance of considering teenagers, who are often harder to place, as they bring unique challenges but rewarding opportunities. “Teenagers are kind of my favorite,” she said.

Since joining the department in 2019, Mefford has facilitated 14 adoptions, cherishing the chance to witness children finding lasting family connections. “Forever means forever,” she said.
