Governor Eric Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) gathered in Petersburg Thursday to announce nearly $140 million in funding through the Community Crossings matching grant program. The event took place at the Pike County Courthouse and included representatives from cities, towns, and counties across southwest Indiana.
The Community Crossings initiative, part of Governor Holcomb’s Next Level Roads program, has been a major source of funding for local road and bridge improvements since its launch in 2016. “Nearly 14,000 miles of road and over 200 local bridges have been replaced or rehabilitated through this program since 2017,” said Holcomb. He added that these projects have provided substantial economic and quality-of-life benefits to communities statewide.
Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. Over $1.8 billion in state matching funds have been distributed since the program began. INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith highlighted the program’s reach, stating, “This program has impacted communities in all 92 Indiana counties, most more than once.”
The next call for project submissions will open in January 2024. A full list of the 223 communities receiving matching funds in the current round is available on the Indiana Department of Transportation website.
