Two contested school board races in Knox County brought two upsets on Election Day.

In the South Knox School Board District C race, current board president Michael Edwards lost his seat to challenger John Carnahan. Carnahan took a decisive 70.6% of the vote, with a final tally of 2,040 votes to Edwards’ 847.

In the Vincennes Community School Board At-Large race, two of three incumbents secured re-election. Karla Smith led with 22.6% of the vote, followed closely by Aaron Bauer at 21.6%. Newcomer Kolby Kerzan clinched the third open seat with just over 20% in the five-person race. Incumbent Barb Toole earned 18.2%, while challenger McKenzie Young finished with 17.3%.

Knox County saw a record voter turnout, with 67% of registered voters casting ballots. More than 15,300 of the nearly 23,000 registered voters participated either early or on Election Day.

Officials note that Tuesday’s results are the unofficial final counts.

Elsewhere,

Pike County’s election results favored Republicans in all contested races.

In the County Commissioner District 1 race, Jeff Nelson secured re-election with over 78% of the vote.

For County Council At-Large seats, Republicans Jeff Harting, Eric Smith, and Greg Willis defeated two Democratic candidates.

In the Pike County School Board races, District 4 incumbent Chris Satterfield retained his seat with just over 51% of the vote. District 3 incumbent Chris McKinney won with 60%, while Gary Willis claimed victory in District 5 with nearly 51.7%.

Voter turnout in Pike County was nearly 65%, with more than 6,000 of the county’s 9,300 registered voters casting ballots.

 

Daviess County saw record voter turnout with 66 percent of registered voters participating. Republican candidates swept all county races, running unopposed.

The school board races brought the night’s closest contests. In the North Daviess School Corporation District 3 race, incumbent Robin Dove narrowly retained his seat with 1,213 votes, defeating challenger Jared Smith by just 200 votes.

For Washington Community Schools, three candidates competed for two at-large seats as an incumbent  did not seek re-election. Kyle Cornelius led the race, retaining his seat with 4,056 votes. Rob McCormick, a retired Washington Community Schools administrator and teacher, secured the second seat with 3,692 votes. Ryan Daschner, the third candidate, received 2,355 votes.
