A strong voter turnout is anticipated today, driven by interest in national and state races. Knox County’s ballot, however, stands out with no local Democratic candidates, a rare occurrence in recent history.
All county offices were decided in the May Primary, leaving no contested local races on today’s ballot. Dan Reitmeyer will return to the County Council At-Large alongside Jon Hillenbrand and Kevin Meyer, maintaining the council’s 7-0 Republican majority. T.J. Brink will continue as County Commissioner for District 1, while Tim Ellerman II, who defeated Trent Hinkle in the primary, will represent District 2. Cendy Joslin remains County Treasurer, and Joe Millspaugh, appointed earlier this year, will serve a full four-year term as County Coroner starting in January.
Knox County Surveyor Dick Vermillion remains the only elected Democrat in the county.
Despite the lack of contested county races, there are important decisions for school board seats in both Vincennes and South Knox.
Knox County Clerk David Shelton noted a positive trend in voter engagement, saying, “We have a lot of first-time voters coming, whether they be younger students just getting registered for the first time or even older adults who had never voted before. So that’s very encouraging.”
As polling stations remain open 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., Shelton also explained the process after the polls close: “We have to wait till everybody brings their materials back to the courthouse and we do tabulations. It’s important to remember that the totals given on election night are always unofficial results. There are a few votes that may be counted after Election Day, like provisional ballots and those from overseas and military voters.” He added, “Those numbers will fluctuate slightly, but I estimate fewer than 20 additional votes will need to be considered after Election Day.”
Full election results will be available tonight on WVUB Radio and Vincennes PBS.
