As Halloween approaches, many residents share urban legends.

One of those local legends involves the Cannonball Bridge which is steeped in some eerie tales.

Built as a railroad bridge in 1924 and now a single-lane bridge, it connects Indiana and Illinois. Despite its recent renovation, the bridge has a haunting past that some believe is tied to a ghostly figure known as the “Purple Head.”

One legend says the Purple Head belonged to a Native American never properly laid to rest. Others tell of a man who met a gruesome fate on a rainy night there, leaving his head drifting, looking for peace.

You can learn more in a full video on the Purple Head at the Vincennes PBS YouTube channel, which also features many other stories and features.
