State legislators recently visited the I-70 construction zone in Hancock County to observe Indiana’s “Safe Zones” worksite speed control program. The program, launched as a five-year pilot in 2023, uses speed detection technology to monitor vehicles in construction areas.

State Rep. Jim Pressel, the bill’s author, explained the program’s goal: “to gather information on how to keep our roads and workers safe.” Since its launch, Safe Zones has seen a positive impact on traffic safety, encouraging drivers to slow down in work zones.

The program monitors vehicle speeds and, after the pre-enforcement period, will issue fines for speeding. With more than 30 worksite-related deaths in Indiana in 2023, INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith emphasized that reducing speeds in these zones is crucial for saving lives.
