The Knox County Sheriff’s Department is responding to citizens calls concerning more scams.

It seems Knox County residents are being targeted with similar fake calls and letters as some surrounding counties in recent weeks.

The scam usually starts with a phone call from someone using a spoofed number that appears to be from local law enforcement. The scammer claims the victim has an arrest warrant for an unpaid debt or fine. They use threats and intimidation, often demanding immediate payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Authorities stress that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never request payment over the phone or use such tactics. If you receive a suspicious call, you should hang up immediately and contact the Knox County Sheriff’s Office at 812-882-7660.

In addition to phone scams, another variant involves fake arrest warrant letters. These letters may include the victim’s personal information such as name, address, and birth date, as well as counterfeit court documents to make the threat seem more legitimate. Victims are often asked to pay immediately to avoid arrest.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and remember that no legal entity will call or send letters demanding payment for arrest warrants.
