Lester Square Skate Park in Vincennes is open to skateboarders.

A grand opening celebration for the newly renovated facility is this Saturday at 10-am.

Former Vincennes Parks and Recreation Superintendent Steve Beamon shared the park’s history, explaining that it began in 2006 when Mayor Terry Mooney, the Vincennes City Council, and the Parks Board transformed old, unused tennis courts into a new skate park. It quickly became a popular spot for skaters of all ages.

Beamon gave special recognition to the late Mayor Mooney and Pat Clark, who played key roles in the original project.

Over time, the park’s equipment aged, and the goal was to create a more modern, permanent facility. Beamon says 18 years later, that vision has been realized thanks to Mayor Yochum, the current City Council, the Parks Board, and Parks Superintendent J.R. Field.

Beamon reflected on how the original skaters, now in their 20s and 30s, might bring their own children to enjoy the park.

The grand opening on Saturday will include a ZAMCO  jam session where skaters can perform tricks for prizes and the 1732 Skate Shop will be on hand.

Food trucks will also be on site.

Again the opening is Saturday at 10-am at Lester Square Memorial Park at 901 Church Street.
