Big news for Pike County as AES Indiana announces a major investment of $1.1 billion from 2024 to 2026.

It includes the transformation of the Petersburg power plant from coal to natural gas, pending approval from state regulators. The project also brings new solar power and battery storage facilities, adding 250 megawatts of solar energy and 180 megawatt-hours of battery storage.

The investment means more than just cleaner energy. Around 300 jobs will be created during construction, with an estimated $40 million in taxes and benefits flowing into Pike County over the next two decades.

AES Indiana’s President, Brandi Davis-Handy, also announced a $100,000 donation for a new community center in Petersburg.

Local leaders highlighted the positive impact on the economy and quality of life for residents.

At the announcement, Ashley Willis, Executive Director of the Pike County Economic Development Corporation, spoke passionately about the positive impact the projects will have on the local economy and quality of life.

Petersburg Mayor R.C. Klipsch spoke about the history of the great partnership between Pike County and AES saying he’s optimistic for the future of Pike County.

It was 65 years ago when Indianapolis Power and Light announced they would invest $125 million in Pike County with the construction of the Petersburg Generating Station.
