The Knox County Health Department celebrated the success of this year’s Large Item Free Trash Day, held on July 20. The event offered no-cost disposal for bulky items and trash, exceeding expectations in participation and impact.

Aligning with the Health Department’s goal of promoting community cleanliness, the event saw hundreds of residents clearing out unwanted furniture, small appliances, and other large items. Dr. Alan Stewart, Health Officer, thanked Republic Services for their crucial role, noting they donated the first 25 tons of trash disposal, assisted with unloading, and offered extra tonnage at cost.

This second annual event saw a significant increase in participation, collecting over 55 tons of trash compared to last fall’s 25 tons. Despite wait times of up to one hour, community members appreciated the free service and its positive impact, helping deter illegal dumping.

“We are incredibly pleased with the turnout and positive feedback,” said Dr. Stewart. “This event underscores the importance of working together to maintain a clean and sustainable county. We are grateful to all the residents who participated and made this event a success.”
