scam-alert-2

A scammer made a crucial error Monday__he tried to con someone who works at the local jail.

The caller claimed to be “Officer Logan” with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and said a certain individual was in custody and needed money. But “Officer Logan” picked the wrong target.

The person he called works at the sheriff’s office and was aware that there is no Officer Logan at the department. Second, the person allegedly in jail was not in their custody.

Once confronted, the scammer quickly hung up. The call came from a spoofed number, making it untraceable.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public it will never call to ask for money. If someone claiming to be law enforcement asks for payment over the phone, hang up and call 812-882-7660 to verify.

As always, never give money or personal information to anyone over the phone unless you made the call and know exactly who you’re talking to.
