womens-day

It’s Women’s History Month and Saturday is International Women’s Day.

According to internationalwomensday.com, International Women’s Day began in the early 1900s amid growing activism for women’s rights. It was first observed in the U.S. in 1909, with an international push following in 1911. The date of March 8 was established in 1917 after Russian women’s protests led to voting rights. The United Nations recognized the day in 1975, and it continues to promote gender equality worldwide.

The Vincennes State Historic Sites will offer special tours on Saturday in honor of the day.   Tours run at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 2 p.m. at the site’s main location on West Harrison Street.

The tours highlight women who shaped Southern Indiana history, including Lucy Sullivan Stout, Lydia Bacon, Polly Strong, and early female students at Jefferson Academy. Tickets are $10, with discounts for Indiana State Museum members.

Tickets can be purchased on-site or online at indianamuseum.org/vincennes.
