In his weekly update from the statehouse, Indiana State Representative Bruce Borders of Jasonville re-outlined the GOP agenda for the current General Assembly Session.
He mentioned several legislative priorities, emphasizing taxpayer protection and streamlined government.
Key goals include passing a balanced two-year state budget, reducing K-12 school regulations (HB 1002), and addressing health care costs (HB 1003, HB 1004). Other priorities focus on improving housing access (HB 1005) and strengthening public safety through increased support for deputy prosecutors (HB 1006).
Borders encouraged Hoosiers to stay informed and reach out with questions about this year’s legislation.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans Daryl Schmitt of Jasper and Eric Bassler of Washington talked about Senate Bill 2 in their weekly reports.
Both lawmakers acknowledged the challenges of crafting a balanced state budget while addressing competing priorities. They noted that while K-12 education has historically received the largest share of Indiana’s General Fund, rapidly increasing Medicaid spending is reducing funds available for other needs like education.
To address this, Senate Bill 2 aims to better manage Medicaid spending by ensuring only eligible individuals receive benefits, helping preserve the program for those who need it most. Schmitt and Bassler emphasized that while the bill won’t solve all fiscal challenges, it is a critical step toward sustainable Medicaid management.
