The Vincennes Community School Corporation released a statement Thursday concerning a recent security breach involving PowerSchool, the software used to manage student data.
The breach impacted thousands of school districts across the U.S. and Canada. The VSCS stated that they did not have information specific to the corporation but will notify everyone once they do.
VCSC said the breach was beyond the corporation’s control and could not have been prevented at the local level.
According to PowerSchool, the compromised data includes student addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, grade point averages, and medical alerts. Parent and guardian contact information was also affected. In addition, sensitive student and employee data, including social security numbers, were exposed. VCSC is working directly with those impacted to address the situation.
PowerSchool has assured the district that efforts were made to delete the stolen data and prevent it from being shared further. They are collaborating with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to safeguard against future breaches.
As part of their response, PowerSchool will offer credit monitoring for affected adults and identity protection services for impacted minors. VCSC is committed to working with the company to ensure that appropriate cybersecurity measures are in place to prevent future incidents.
