shoveling-snow

Several inches of snow cover Indiana, prompting the American Heart Association to remind Hoosiers of the risks associated with shoveling. Research shows heavy snow removal can increase the risk of heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest, especially for those who are not physically fit.

Dr. William Gill, the Association’s Indianapolis president, says, “Shoveling snow is vigorous and stressful on the heart, especially in freezing conditions.” Studies reveal heart rates can spike quickly during the activity.

To stay safe, take frequent breaks, use a small shovel, and avoid eating heavy meals or drinking alcohol before shoveling. Also, know the warning signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or nausea, and call 9-1-1 immediately if symptoms arise.
