giving-tuesday

Today marks Giving Tuesday, an annual event inspiring charitable giving to support local communities and nonprofit organizations.

Mark Hill, Executive Director of the United Way of Knox County, urges residents to consider donating after a Thanksgiving holiday filled with plenty.

“After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, you have Giving Tuesday. If you have any spare dollars, send them to a charity of your choice,” Hill said.

One organization seeking support is Generations, the local Agency on Aging and Disability, which operates a Meals on Wheels program. Currently, 100 homebound seniors are on a waitlist for meal deliveries.

Alma Kramer of Generations highlighted the challenges, noting that rising costs, including a 30% increase in milk prices, have outpaced funding. “Waiting for nutrition services can lead to malnutrition, serious health issues, and social isolation,” Kramer said.

Generations invites donations to its Meals on Wheels program. Contributions of $8 feed one person for a day, $40 for a week, and $180 for a month.

Another way to give is through volunteering your time.

A local cause needing help is the Salvation Army which is always looking for bell ringers for their seasonal Red Kettle Campaign.
