A long-awaited transportation solution arrived in Vincennes on Monday with the official launch of the Vincennes Trolley Service.
The occasion was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at City Hall, attended by city officials, community leaders, and residents. Guests even boarded the trolley for its inaugural route, which includes over 50 convenient stops across the city.
“This service is designed to get people where they need to go—doctor’s offices, the hospital, grocery stores, and other key locations,” said Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum. The project became a reality thanks to funding from the Hoosier Enduring Legacy Program (HELP) and other sources, which supported surveys, consulting, the purchase of buses, and the ability to offer free rides Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Jamie Dugan, Community Coordinator for the City of Vincennes, emphasized the importance of this service:
“Transportation has always come up in community conversations. It was the top outcome of our survey, tying into health, wellness, and economic development. This is a giant day for us.” she said.
Operated through the Vincennes YMCA’s VanGo program, the trolley service aims to ease the burden on VanGo’s on-demand transportation. YMCA CEO Dennis Kordes explained how the new system complements existing services:
“This will help alleviate some of the stress on our on-demand service, especially for larger apartment complexes where demand is highest.”
The trolley route takes about an hour to complete, and an app is available to help riders track the buses in real time and plan their trips.
