The Knox County Public Library Board has adopted a resolution to go officially go fine-free, eliminating overdue fees for borrowed materials.
The decision aligns with the American Library Association’s stance that fines can create barriers to fair library access. The board noted that overdue fines have not been charged since March 2020 and decided to make the change permanent.
The hope is that the action will encourage library users to return while also attracting new patrons.
While no overdue fees will be imposed, the library does ask people to return materials on time to ensure availability for others. Fees for lost or damaged items will remain in place.
In lieu of fines, the library welcomes donations to support its programs and services.
