Vincennes University Jasper hosted its annual Center for Technology, Innovation, and Manufacturing (CTIM) Challenge on Wednesday, Nov. 13, offering local high school students a hands-on introduction to STEM careers and industry connections.
The event brought together 128 students from 32 teams across schools, including Jasper, South Spencer, Pike Central, Heritage Hills, and more. Students competed in eight industry-sponsored challenges designed to mirror real-world tasks in engineering, manufacturing, and technology.
Activities included creating a popsicle-stick drone, engineering a chicken coop within specific constraints, and constructing a car to perform under fan-generated wind. These challenges emphasized problem-solving, teamwork, and practical STEM skills.
Sponsors like Farbest Foods, Kimball Electronics, and Jasper Engines & Transmissions supported the event. Jasper Engines’ Jason Recker highlighted the importance of fostering soft skills, stating, “Effort and attitude are what we’re looking for in our workforce, and we can show students the value of those attributes.”
Jasper High School claimed the top overall prize, followed by Heritage Hills and Northeast Dubois teams. Cash prizes totaling $4,000 were awarded.
The CTIM Challenge reflects VU Jasper’s commitment to aligning education with workforce needs and fostering regional economic growth.
