fire-risk

The National Weather Service has issued a statement saying that dry, windy conditions are increasing the risk of grass or brush fires.

A combination of dry surface vegetation, wind gusts between 20 to 30 mph, and relative humidity dropping below 30 percent has created hazardous conditions for potential wildfires.

Officials strongly discourage any outdoor burning under these conditions. Residents are urged to take extra precautions, including avoiding activities that may accidentally ignite fires, such as operating equipment that could spark or driving vehicles near dry vegetation.

Authorities remind the public to stay vigilant to prevent any accidental fires from starting.

Sullivan and Martin Counties have burn bans in effect due to the dry conditions.
