The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has officially certified the Vincennes Levee, concluding a process that began in 2006. Vincennes Utilities Services Manager Kirk Bouchie informed the City Council of the milestone, highlighting the history behind the certification. The effort began after Hurricane Katrina when the federal government started evaluating levees nationwide.

In 2006, it was found that the Vincennes Levee did not meet federal standards. Over the years, around $10 million was invested to bring the levee into compliance, with funding from utility revenue, local government, Vincennes University, Good Samaritan, and grants.

Bouchie emphasized that while the levee is now certified, maintenance and improvements will continue.

At the City Council meeting, special recognition was given to Stormwater Coordinator and Levee Manager Hunter Pinnell for his exceptional work on the project, receiving applause from the Mayor, Council, and attendees.
