Indiana University is tightening restrictions on student protests for the upcoming academic year.

Starting August 1, the new policy effectively bans encampments at all nine IU campuses and restricts protest activities after 11 p.m.

On Monday, IU’s Board of Trustees approved the new expressive activities policy which requires advanced approval for erecting signs and structures and limits allowable expressive activities to between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The Herald-Times of Bloomington reports the policy passed with a 6-3 vote.

IU General Counsel Tony Prather mentioned that the final policy was crafted after reviewing over 200 pages of feedback from students and stakeholders and comparing it to policies at other Big 10 institutions.
