Knox and surrounding county sheriff’s departments are extending their condolences on the death of an area colleague. Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse passed away Wednesday after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Plasse was elected as Vigo County Sheriff in 2018, beginning his term in 2019. Before becoming sheriff, he served 33 years with the Terre Haute Police Department, including 11 years as Chief of Police.
His military career spanned 34 years in the Indiana Army National Guard, where he retired as a Sergeant Major. Plasse was highly decorated, receiving awards such as the Bronze Star Medal and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
Sheriff Plasse’s leadership extended beyond his official duties; he was involved with numerous community organizations and was named “Sheriff of the Year” by the Indiana Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch in January 2024.
Funeral services for Sheriff Plasse will be held Monday at the Vigo County Fairgrounds, with visitation starting at 10 AM and the service following at 1 PM.
