FROM INDIANA PUBLIC BROADCASTING
Indiana’s labor force participation rate fell last month to its lowest point in more than two years.
There are several potential causes for that decline, according to Rick Farrant, director of communications for Northeast Indiana Works, a regional workforce development organization.
Farrant says one contributing factor is that some businesses are trying to get by with a smaller workforce
“I do think that many businesses have learned or are learning how to get by with less. So in other words, they’re learning how to complete the same task, but be a little more lean.”
Farrant adds that some employers are utilizing new technology in their operations, and in turn, are scaling back their hiring.
“I also think that, that the changing nature of automation and AI and various other technological advancements, is meaning that many businesses don’t need as many workers.”
Farrants also says that with the decline in the labor force, less money is being spent across the state, which could have long- term effects on the economy.
